Class Activity: Extending Meaning

Background: Leo Africanus was a white explorer who was one of the first to venture into some parts of Africa. Admittedly, he did not go very deep into northern Africa or even visit the south, east, or west. However, being the only written account of the undiscovered land, he had quite an advantage and no challengers to his ‘findings’.
Read and complete: Create a two column list: one with virtues and one with vices of Afrikans. While reading, create a list with examples from the text. You and your group are going to create a mobile paper together using the conclusions that you drew from the reading.
Step One: On the bottom of the plate, write your group’s thesis/claim about the paper.
Step Two: Using a notecard, write down one particular quote that you believe can be used to support your thesis/claim. Connect your notecard to the paper plate using the string.
Step Three: That quote can inspire a number of extended thoughts that relate/tie back/compare to the thesis statement. Use another notecard to write down each thought. One analysis thought per card.
Step Four: When you have exhausted absolutely every extended thought you can think of to support your thesis, we will hang out mobile on the ceiling.
Olaudah Equiano was an upper class native of Nigeria before the slave traders raided his West African village. He endured an incredible life journey that included being bought and sold a number of times. Often, his 'masters' promised him freedom, but it wasn't until he bought his own freedom that he was able to write about the horror of slavery. Many historians believe that it was his autobiography that ultimately put an end to slavery in Europe. (The abolition of slavery in America would take many more years.) In fact, his autobiography remains one of the most famous and influential works of literature in the entire world. One of the most important reasons is because of Equiano's recollection of his childhood in Africa. His story shed light on a much different version of the 'Dark Continent' and is often compared to Conrad's Heart of Darkness.
Comparison Essay: Point by Point Style

While there are a number of ways to structure a comparison essay, we are going to practice the very direct method of the point by point argument. Compare Africanus’s essay to Equiano’s autobiography. Consider how the two works talk about similar points about life but their description of those points lead to very different conclusions about the ‘vices’ and virtures’ of Africa. What conclusions would you draw about this comparison? Choose one claim and support that claim in a point by point analysis. Use this outline as a guide:
*Pivot transitions are absolutely key here. In between ‘A’ and ‘B’, you will need a comparison transition that will help your reader understand the intention of your next information. Contrastingly, however, on the other hand, in comparison, unlike... many more.
*Introduction will need to introduce both works and authors. That way you don't need to cite in your paper. *Embed quotes as often as possible. *Lead conclusion sentences should suggest the next major topic. *You need 3 SAT vocabulary words per page.
